A local citizen's group known as "The
Friends of Firefighters" raised $25,000 for the purchase of a
CairnsIris thermal imaging device. This device gives firefighters
the ability to see through smoke thereby reducing the amount of time needed to
search for someone who may be trapped in a burning structure. The fire
department is currently accepting donations to purchase a second thermal
imaging device which will be a hand held unit to compliment our helmet mounted
device.
Anyone wishing to make a donation for
this life saving tool, or for more information, may contact the fire
department at 610-258-8746.

Thanks to the numerous donations, the Cairns Iris was
received on August 2, 1999. Chief Collins reports that training was done
on August
28th and 29th with the unit being placed in service at that time.
Donations are still being accepted for a second unit,
with our goal of purchasing a hand held unit to compliment the helmet mounted model.
